Maltese football is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures, Victor Zammit, the former president of Birkirkara FC, who passed away on Wednesday afternoon.
Zammit’s name is forever etched in the history of Birkirkara FC, having been at the helm of the club during its most successful era. Serving as president from 1998 to 2009, he was the driving force behind a remarkable transformation that saw the Stripes rise from a competitive but modest side to one of the top teams in Maltese football.
Under his leadership, Birkirkara secured 18 major domestic honours, including two Premier League titles, four FA Trophies, and five Super Cups. Beyond silverware, Zammit’s legacy lies in the stability and long-term vision he brought to the club, laying strong foundations that helped solidify Birkirkara’s status as a football powerhouse in Malta.
In a heartfelt tribute, the club issued a statement honouring his memory:
“Birkirkara FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former Club President, Mr Victor Zammit. Mr Zammit served as President from 1998 to 2009, a period that marked a turning point in the Club’s history. He transformed Birkirkara from a fringe side into a team capable of beating any Maltese opposition. He will always be remembered for guiding the Club to its first major successes and laying the foundation for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time.”
As a mark of respect, Birkirkara players will wear black armbands during their UEFA Conference League qualifier against FC Petrocub in Moldova on Thursday.
The Malta Football Association also paid tribute, acknowledging Zammit’s lasting contribution to the local game:
“The Malta FA is deeply saddened by the passing of Victor Zammit, former Birkirkara FC President. His tenure marked a significant chapter in the club’s history and Maltese football as a whole. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.”
