Birkirkara’s European hopes dashed in Chisinau as Petrocub seal comeback

Birkirkara FC’s European campaign came to an early end on Thursday night as the Maltese side fell to a 3–0 defeat against FC Petrocub in the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round second leg, losing 3–1 on aggregate.

After a 1–0 win in the first leg at the Centenary Stadium, Birkirkara travelled to Moldova with cautious optimism. But their hopes were quickly dashed by a sharp and determined Petrocub side that overturned the deficit with three unanswered goals.

Before kick-off, a minute of silence was held in memory of former Birkirkara president Victor Zammit, who passed away earlier this week. The tribute was observed at the Moldova national stadium in Chisinau, the venue for the return leg.

Coach Stefano De Angelis made one change to the side that started in Malta, bringing in Kemar Reid for Lucas Macula. Meanwhile, Petrocub opted for attacking reinforcements with Mihai Lupan and Maxim Cojocaru both handed starts — and their presence paid off.

The hosts immediately pressed forward. Victor Bogaciuc rattled the crossbar with a long-range shot in the 5th minute, and Ion Bors followed up shortly after with another effort that skimmed over.

Birkirkara’s first chance fell to Alexander Satariano, but the Malta striker misfired with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Petrocub kept applying pressure and were finally rewarded on 39 minutes. Lupan spun past his marker and unleashed a rocket into the top corner, leaving Martinez no chance and levelling the tie on aggregate.

The second half saw no immediate changes in personnel, but the home side wasted no time in adding a second. Just 11 minutes in, Lupan doubled his tally, slotting home after a quick attacking move cut through Birkirkara’s defence.

Petrocub seal issue in second half

De Angelis responded by switching to a more attacking setup, introducing Macula and reverting to a four-man defence. The Stripes tried to fight back, with Makoma firing from distance and Macula forcing a solid save from the Petrocub goalkeeper after a smart header.

Satariano also came close, setting up Sasere whose low drive was pushed wide for a corner.

But Petrocub remained composed and eventually put the tie beyond doubt in the 76th minute. Substitute Nicolae Rotaru, on just a few minutes, hammered in a powerful shot from distance to make it 3–0 on the night.

Birkirkara’s European journey ended without reply, though De Angelis did use the final minutes to hand a debut to summer signing Jan Busuttil.

For Birkirkara, the night marked a disappointing conclusion to what had been a promising start to their continental campaign. For Petrocub, it was a dominant home performance that earned them a deserved place in the next round.
