The new EU sanctions package against Russia as explained here includes a new price cap on Russian oil of around $46.7, a ban on the purchase of Russian oil that has been refined by foreign third-parties, and a total ban on Nordtsream pipelines.
Malta has raised concerns about the new sanctions package at an EU Council meeting fearing Maltese flagged-vessels will change their flag register in reaction to the new Russian oil price cap. However, Malta was never going to apply its veto over this issue. Some government consultants are pressuring the government. A government director and consultant published a statement recently stating that Malta should oppose the new EU sanctions to protect Malta’s flag register.
The EU is now has declared that it will be supporting Malta and other EU flag-register nations over the new sanctions package against Russia. The EU’s attention over Malta’s flag-registry will enable further international cooperation on sanctions and enforcement also with regard to third-countries to create a level-playing field between nations.
Malta has recently opened a UN international maritime office which is meant to serve as an international hub for intelligence sharing over maritime sanctions.
