In a press conference held earlier this week, the Nationalist Party couldn’t confirm or deny whether they would be ready to conserve the tax rebate scheme for foreign films. The press conference was held by Graham Bencini and Julie Zahra and the topic was the excessive and exorbitant expenditure by Film Commissioner Johann Grech.
Johann Grech recently issued up to €5 million for the Malta Film Festival which once again hosted David Walliams. The Film Commission has been regularly criticised for its overspending and several irregularities were also highlighted by the National Auditor including a lack of record keeping. The Minister of Culture keeps justifying these exorbitant antics despite everyone telling him they are excessive. The Labour government politicians are using the Film Commission as their personal entertaining club and hence the exorbitant expenses on lavish ceremonies that have no productive value.
The Nationalist Party should be able to come up with positions and policies on peripheral issues quite easily, and the ongoing leadership race shouldn’t even be an issue. You can’t pose as an alternative government if you constantly and regularly fail to answer questions and give interviews. Julie Zahra has so far told us nothing except for what we already know and her lack of cultural knowledge is also a bit worrying to say the least.
It’s one of those scenes in which PN’s extreme dysfunction is glaring as they can’t even come to terms with doing even basic policies on peripheral matters. PN is like an old engine which hasn’t been oiled for a long time and is coughing smoke from its pipes as it makes a great effort to just remain fired-up.
