Opposition highlights higher inflation in Malta than the EU average

Yesterday, the Nationalist Party held a press conference highlighting the fact that inflation in Malta is rising higher than the EU’s average. Ivan Castillo, Opposition MP is proposing further tax breaks or part-timers earning up to €10,000 and a national fund to alleviate inflationary pressure. The latter proposal is similar in principle to the ongoing government subsidies in fuel and electricity bills which are the main cause of Malta’s rising national debt.

According to Eurostat statistics, inflation in June in Malta rose by 2.5% but the EU average was 2.3%. The lowest rates were registered in Cyprus (0.5%), France (0.9%) and Ireland (1.6%) and the highest rates were registered in Romania (5.8%), Estonia (5.2%), Hungary and Slovakia (both 4.6%). Inflation in the EU in June 2024 rose higher by 2.5%.

The policies of the Nationalist Party on inflation are very similar to the Labour government’s and criticism is mainly focused on mismanagement. You can watch the press conference below.
