Can’t see the forest for the trees: mental health

In his regular Sunday political address, the Prime Minister said that the Labour government is addressing the mental health issue with investment in new mental health facilities. The comments were made following a number of suicides which were reported in the press recently.

On a political level, mental health shouldn’t just be an exclusively medical issue. The government has a responsibility to ensure the fundamental guarantees of society, including security and well-being: these are fundamental issues which Labour has been ignoring extensively with reckless policies. A perfect example of this issue is how the concerns of Valletta residents about noise disturbances were totally ignored by the government.

Ultimately construction and a lack of planning is pushing Maltese society into new limits and challenges that are radically affecting its fundamental pillars including the birth rate. As long as the government keeps ignoring the growing housing crisis and the lack of urban planning, there is no amount of hospitals and medicine that will avoid the consequences of declining living standards and literal homelessness.
