Malta’s artistic swimming athletes opened their campaign at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with historic performances, marking a new chapter for the sport locally.
Zea Montfort Shines in Solo Technical
On Day 1, Zea Montfort delivered an impressive performance in the Women’s Solo Technical event, earning a personal best score of 206.2883 points. The result marks a significant milestone in her season, representing a 5-point improvement since the European Junior Championships just a month ago.
Montfort’s 2025 campaign began with a score of 176.9416, and over the course of the season, she has consistently raised the bar, ultimately closing her Solo Tech season with an exceptional 30-point progression — a clear reflection of her dedication and technical refinement.
Her participation at the championships was made possible through the support of SportMalta’s International Participation Assistance Scheme.
Historic Debut for Malta’s Duet Team
The Championships also witnessed a landmark moment for Maltese artistic swimming, as Ana Culic and Thea Grima Buttigieg became the first Maltese senior athletes to compete together in the Women’s Duet Technical event on the world stage.
Their debut was nothing short of remarkable. The pair earned a record-breaking score of 214.5317 — the highest ever for Malta in the Duet Technical category. The performance showed significant improvement in both synchronisation and execution, surpassing their previous World Cup performance in May by eight points, and marking a 15-point gain over the course of the season.
Culic and Grima Buttigieg finished 30th, climbing five places compared to last year’s World Championships — a significant step forward for Malta’s presence in international artistic swimming.
These results not only highlight the athletes’ talent and growth but also signal Malta’s growing competitiveness on the world stage in aquatic sports.
