The government executive who coordinated and implemented the Health Minister’s plans for an ambulance alarm in Saint George’s Square for restaurants in the area, is the Health Minister’s private assistant, Mariella Abela. The Maltese Herald has been informed that the Minister of Gozo had originally opposed this initiative and preferred to have the tables in the square cleared.
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela put up a strong fight for the installation of an ambulance alarm because his relatives, own a restaurant in the square called Manouche. Mariella Abela, his private secretary is married to Christian Abela, the Health Minister’s brother, and one of the family members who own the restaurant.
Mariella Abela is also contesting the next general election under the Labour Party’s ticket.
The case about the alarm system caught our attention last Sunday when relatives of the Health Minister were seen fuming and removing the festa banners hoisted in front of their restaurant. In last April, an ambulance could not get through the square because of restaurant tables spread across the square. The Health Ministry has installed an alarm system in the square to notify restaurant owners of incoming ambulances, to prompt them to remove their tables before the ambulance arrives.
