Momentum, the political party led by Arnold Cassola, has launched a national petition calling on Parliament to urgently address the growing disruption caused by unmanaged tourism in residential areas.
Citing sleepless nights, overflowing trash, and deteriorating quality of life, Momentum says neighbourhoods like Swieqi, St. Julian’s, Sliema, Buġibba, and Valletta are becoming “unlivable.” The petition demands immediate reforms to restore basic order and protect residents from the fallout of “anything goes” tourism.
“It feels like the basic right to peace in your own home has been thrown out the window,” Cassola said. “This isn’t about being anti-tourist – it’s about being pro-resident. Tourism is important, but people who live here deserve protection from noise, disrespect, and lawlessness.”
The petition outlines several specific proposals, including:
- On-the-spot fines for rowdy behaviour and illegal dumping
- Stronger street enforcement, especially at night
- Penalties for repeat-offender landlords
- Mandatory security deposits on short-term rentals
- A public awareness campaign to inform tourists of local rules and penalties
Momentum argues that these are “common-sense” measures to address what has become a systemic failure of enforcement and regulation.
Opposition MP Mario de Marco has also weighed in on the rising complaints, particularly following the government’s controversial announcement that Italian tourists will be accompanied by Italian police officers. He called on Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri to explain why foreign officers are needed, questioning whether the government is losing control, and the kind of tourists being brought to the Islands. De Marco echoed concerns about worsening behaviour by some visitors, including late-night noise, public drunkenness, and vandalism.
“Residents are fed up with being ignored while their neighbourhoods are sold off for profit,” said Cassola. “We need Parliament to act, not just talk, before the situation becomes irreversible.”
