Thousands of Ukrainians were out in Kyiv and other cities yesterday protesting the government’s reform to bring the anti-corruption institutions under the responsibility of the Attorney-General. A Financial Times investigation is reporting that President Zelensky prefers this shift in order to protect key allies accused of corruption.
President Zelensky stated that the reform is needed to filter out Russian spies and that the fight against corruption will continue while the Ukrainian intelligence services said that the ongoing protests in Ukraine are also being exploited by Russia to undermine Ukraine’s war effort.
The German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul also visited Kyiv to meet with the heads of the anti-corruption agencies and stated that hampering their independence also hampers Ukraine’s path to the EU. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed concerns about the reforms and stated that the Commission will be requesting explanations from the Ukrainian government, reiterating that the fight against corruption is closely tied to Ukraine’s EU membership process.
