Malta is mourning the loss of Notary Anthony Spiteri Debono, husband of President Myriam Spiteri Debono, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 78. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, 29th July, at 2:00 p.m. at St Paul’s Shipwreck Church in Valletta.

Spiteri Debono, a respected figure in Malta’s legal and public life, leaves behind his wife, three children – Elena, George, and Maria Kristina – and five grandchildren. Known for his humility, integrity, and unwavering support for his family, he maintained a low public profile while remaining a steady presence in the country’s civic life.

In this time of mourning, the Office of the President has requested privacy for the grieving family.

Tributes have poured in from across the political and religious spectrum. Archbishop Charles Scicluna offered sincere condolences on behalf of the Church in Malta. Gozo Bishop Anton Teuma also expressed sympathy on behalf of the Diocese.

Prime Minister Robert Abela remembered Spiteri Debono as “an authentic, humble and kind man,” highlighting his quiet but impactful presence in both his legal career and public life. Opposition Leader Bernard Grech described him as a man of few words but great strength, noting his humility and the respect he earned throughout his life.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola shared her sorrow, describing the loss as a painful one for both the Spiteri Debono family and the nation. She acknowledged his vital role as a steady and supportive partner to the President.

Political parties from all sides – Partit Nazzjonalista, Partit Laburista, and ADPD – offered their condolences, remembering him as a pillar of strength, a man of integrity, and a loyal figure whose character left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Anthony Spiteri Debono will be remembered not only as the husband of Malta’s President, but as a quiet force of support, humility, and dedication to his family and country.
