A serious traffic accident in Fgura on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman and left multiple people injured, including the parents of Prime Minister Robert Abela.
The collision occurred at around 3:30p.m. on Triq Hompesch, involving a Toyota Corolla driven by a 23-year-old woman from Żabbar and an Audi Q3 driven by a 77-year-old man from Marsaskala. The impact left a total of seven people requiring hospital treatment.
The victim, a 71-year-old woman also from Żabbar, was a passenger in the Toyota and sadly passed away shortly after being admitted to Mater Dei Hospital. The young driver is in a critical condition, while the elderly male driver and a 76-year-old woman in the Audi sustained grievous injuries. Two boys aged 14 and 11, and a 42-year-old woman, who were also in the Audi, were hospitalised, with their condition still being assessed.
Prime Minister Robert Abela later confirmed that his parents, former President George Abela and Margaret Abela, were involved in the accident and are receiving treatment at Mater Dei. While both are reported to be in stable condition, it is understood that Margaret Abela sustained a broken arm in the crash.
Emergency services, including the Civil Protection Department and multiple ambulances, responded quickly to the scene. Police investigations are ongoing, and Magistrate Ian Farrugia has launched a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Messages of support and concern have poured in following the accident, including a public statement of solidarity and prayer from Archbishop Charles Scicluna.
