Expenditure on social security increases by up to 10.5% in the first half of the year

The government’s expenditure on social contributions have increased by up to 10.5% compared to January-June of last year contributing to a higher government expenditure this year, according to the latest NSO statistics. The highest increase in social expenditure was noted in the standard two-thirds pension scheme with an increase of up to €45.1 million. Up to 60,505 individuals receive pensions from this scheme. The total expenditure on social contributions totaled at up to €668.7 million.

Expenditure on social security benefits also increased by  12.9% compared to January-June of last year totaling up to €188.9 million.

Expenditure on social contributions have been increasing steadily over the last ten years, and from 2020 to 2024 the increase was a total of  €284.1 million, and 32.9%. The increases are mainly attributed to cost of adjustment-livings granted in the government’s yearly Financial Estimates (Budget).
