Malta’s labour market remained resilient in June 2025, with the unemployment rate falling to 2.5%, according to figures released by the National Statistics Office (NSO). This marks a 0.1 percentage point decline from May and a notable 0.5-point drop year-on-year, continuing the country’s trend of near-full employment.
The total number of unemployed persons stood at 8,507, reflecting a 2.6% decrease from the previous month and a sharp 14.5% decline compared to June 2024. The majority (79.8%) were aged between 25 and 74 years, totalling 6,790 individuals, while youth unemployment accounted for 1,717 persons (20.2%).
Gender breakdown: Male rate falls, female rate holds steady
-
Male unemployment stood at 2.6%, down 0.1 percentage points from May.
-
Female unemployment remained unchanged at 2.4%, indicating steady participation and stability in the female workforce.
Youth unemployment edges up
Despite the overall positive trend, the youth unemployment rate (ages 15–24) increased to 6.1%, a 0.4 percentage point rise from the previous month. This slight uptick suggests ongoing challenges for young jobseekers entering the workforce.
In contrast, unemployment among those aged 25–74 dropped to 2.2%, further strengthening the broader employment landscape.
While Malta continues to register one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU, the rise in youth joblessness highlights the need for targeted employment policies, particularly for younger cohorts navigating a competitive job market.
