A diplomatic source that is privy to meetings of the European Council has informed The Maltese Herald that European leaders are reluctant to demand a renegotiation of the the trade deal struck by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Donald Trump. The diplomatic source told The Maltese Herald that, given the Commission President shook hands with President Trump over a 15% tariff, this will be unlikely to be renegotiated.
European leaders are also frustrated with EU Commission President for imposing on them a deal which they didn’t agree to. The deal still has to be approved by the European Parliament.
On the other hand, European leaders say that the way forward is to negotiate exceptions and tackle clauses issue by issue – this is also the position of French President Emmanuel Macron who was also disappointed by the deal.
European leaders are actively discussing their priorities with the EU Commission, which they consider national interests to be addressed through specific clauses and exceptions in the trade contractual agreement.
