Swieqi United cruise past Anenii Noi in historic Women’s Champions League debut

Swieqi United made an emphatic statement on their UEFA Women’s Champions League debut, dismantling Moldovan champions Anenii Noi 5-0 in Slovakia to reach the final of their mini-tournament group.

After a goalless first half, the Maltese champions took control in the second period, scoring five unanswered goals through Salamatu Abdulai (2), Aleksandra Yaneva, Sara Saliba, and Andela Kricak.

Coach Dorianne Theuma’s side dominated possession and chances throughout the match. While Anenii Noi initially posed a physical challenge, Swieqi’s class and attacking flair ultimately shone through. Abdulai opened the scoring in the 48th minute and quickly doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Yaneva added a third shortly after, while Saliba converted from the penalty spot and Kricak sealed the win late on.

Several new signings impressed in their debut, including Yaneva and Saliba in attack, and Valentina Rapa in defence. Captain Shona Zammit provided composure and leadership in midfield.

Swieqi United now advance to face either hosts Spartak Myjava or Budućnost of Montenegro for a place in Round 2.
