The disgraced ex-Premier Joseph Muscat wrote a long statement on his Facebook page about the government’s proposed construction and planning reforms. The post is surprising because Joseph Muscat has an agreement with the Prime Minister as part of their Devil’s Pact to remain silent on political issues, and naturally, not to criticise the government. Joseph Muscat criticised the government for failing to communicate the reform in advance and rushed to publish it in the Government Gazette.
Overall, the reform is a good says Joseph Muscat. What he doesn’t say however is that he is under the payroll of Michael Stivala, one of Malta’s leading construction developers and also the President of Malta’s Developers Association. Joseph Muscat is technically a representative of the construction lobbying and he is talking their book.
Clearly, however, Joseph Muscat is making use of this opportunity to do some politics with a carefully worded statement that also acknowledges the NGOs, and simultaneously criticising and praising the government. He’s using his usual and typical political discourse to push the interests of his payers and once again remind the public of his astute political persona.
The Labour Party should have called him out as the corrupt fraud he is back in 2019. Now, Labour faces a more difficult problem, as he wields his political influence uncontrollably, even at the risk of harming the political position of the Prime Minister himself.
