Europe approaches Friday’s Trump-Putin meeting with confusion and weakness

European leaders seem to be completely confused and lost as what to do about next Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. A series of events this week have shown that Europe is totally unprepared for war and equally unprepared to demonstrate any form of strength against Russia during negotiations.

Yesterday, the Coalition of the Willing g held an online meeting with US President JD Vance: a surprising event that is inconsistent with Europe’s position to help Ukraine remain in a strong position. JD Vance has prided himself in attacking Europe and Ukraine for partisan and opportunistic interests at home. He has repeatedly stated that the US is not interested in helping Ukraine and is more interested in making peace with Russia. His presence at the meeting signals that the US is disregarding Europe’s position on Ukraine.

Surprisingly, the meeting was attended by Spain’s Prime Pedro Sanchez despite the fact that Spain has never promised to put boots on the ground in Ukraine as part of security guarantees: a prerequisite to be considered as part of the Coalition of the Willing. Spain’s attendance to the meeting only added to the confusion on what the meeting was all about.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the meeting on Friday, European leaders have done nothing but praise President Donald Trump in very stupid and shallow statement that state nothing at all: European leaders have written at least three times this week about how grateful they feel that President Trump is “working to bring peace in Ukraine”. President Trump wants Ukraine to capitulate by giving up territories to Russia, but European leaders have reiterated their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity: however Europe does not seem to have a clear-set and defined position with defined goals.

All in all, Europe is preparing for one of its most consequential and historic meetings next Friday with total confusion, and blind praise for President Trump. There seems to be no coherent European strategy.

Yesterday. President Zelensky was in Germany meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz reiterated that no decision can be taken on Ukraine without Ukraine’s approval.

President Trump reiterated his empty threat that Russia will face serious consequences if it doesn’t end the war in Ukraine: he already made this threat before by threatening and promising sanctions, but these commitments have all been empty. President Trump also said that he can not stop Russia from bombing civilians and cities because “Iran and Iraq also bomb apartments and hospitals”.

Yesterday Russia once again attacked Ukrainian cities with drones including the city of Chernihiv.
