Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine plans to give no territorial concessions to Russia in next Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. European leaders have collectively signed a statement ahead of the meeting backing Ukraine’s territorial integrity with Hungary being the only country that did not sign the statement. Malta also signed the statement. The statement by European leaders comes in addition to separate statements signed by European countries.
Yesterday, President Zelensky also announced that he held a phone conversation with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan who has offered Ukraine to host a peace summit with Russia and the US. President Zelensky thanked Turkey for its position in supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and also thanked it for being part of the Coalition of the Willing: the coalition of countries among France and the UK which is ready to deploy troops in Ukraine for security guarantees. President Zelensky reiterated that Turkey can help bring “real peace”.
US President Donald Trump is pressuring Ukraine to enter into a land swap with Russia to bring an effective end to the war. However, a peace deal with Ukraine is neither a guarantee that Russia wouldn’t attack Europe or invade Europe once again the future. Russia is considered as the highest security threat to Europe and European nations are currently engaged in an ongoing remilitarisations effort to build effective deterrence against future threats. Ukraine’s war effort is currently sustained with Europe’s backing and the Ukrainian defence industry.
