Valletta’s return to the Malta Premier League ended in a dull 0-0 draw with Birkirkara at the National Stadium, in a match that fell well short of expectations.
Despite the hype around the renewal of this classic rivalry, the game was largely disappointing, with few clear chances and long spells of scrappy play. Valletta, featuring eight new faces, struggled to find rhythm, while Birkirkara failed to make their early pressure count.
Keith Brewer’s second-half effort against the post was Valletta’s closest moment, while Birkirkara’s best chance came late on when Macula glanced a header just wide. Substitute Jan Busuttil also saw a shot blocked, but neither side did enough to deserve victory.
It was a frustrating start for both clubs, whose supporters will expect significant improvement as the season unfolds.

Sliema edge Żabbar in narrow opening win
Sliema Wanderers began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Żabbar St Patrick, thanks to two first-half strikes that proved enough despite heavy pressure after the break.
The Blues went ahead on 15 minutes when Mayron accidentally headed into his own net, and shortly after Thiago Espindola doubled the lead with a low finish for his first goal in Sliema colours.
Żabbar responded just before half-time when Haroun Tchauna headed home from a corner, giving the Southerners hope. In the second half, they dominated proceedings and came close to equalising on several occasions. Substitute Mario Fontanella volleyed against the bar, while Tchauna missed another good chance after rounding the goalkeeper.
Despite their second-half struggles, Sliema held firm to secure three points, while Żabbar were left to rue their missed opportunities.
