Malta’s Under-18 men’s water polo team are making headlines at the European Championship after claiming back-to-back victories in Group D. On Monday they overwhelmed Ukraine, then edged Germany in a historic penalty shootout today. This is the first time that Malta has beaten Germany in any age group in water polo, a historic achievement.
Day 1: Malta 24–9 Ukraine
Malta opened their campaign in emphatic fashion, dismantling Ukraine with a 24–9 win. The team’s firepower was on full display as Julian Cutajar and Julian Chircop both netted five goals apiece, supported by a hat-trick from Luigi Dimech.
Further goals came from Max Lanzon, Sam Engerer, Giancarlo Gatt (2 each), while Miguel Cassar, Shailon Cutajar Casha, Sean Mifsud, Enrico Mallia, and Kyden Agius added one apiece.
Ukraine’s scorers were Yarema (2), and Bombala, Rudnyk, Hurzan, and Mukha with a goal each.
Day 2: Malta 21–20 Germany (after penalties)
On the second day, Malta produced one of their finest-ever youth water polo results, defeating Germany in a nerve-shredding contest. The match finished 11–11 in normal time before Malta triumphed 21–20, converting 10–9 in penalties.
Jayden Cutajar and Julian Chircop again shone with four goals each, while Miguel Cassar, Sean Mifsud, and Enrico Mallia also scored.
Germany’s attack was led by Mityska (3 goals), with Hoffman, De Marco, and Kob each netting twice. Palata and Gothe added one apiece.
Group D Outlook
With two wins from two matches, Malta are now sole leaders in Group D, combining attacking brilliance with the resilience to outlast a European powerhouse like Germany. The results not only boost their chances of progressing but also mark a statement of intent from a team brimming with talent and confidence.
