Ħamrun Spartans took a significant step towards making history in European football after edging past Latvian champions FC RFS 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League Play-Off Round at the National Stadium.
The Reds’ hero was Saliou Thioune, who struck the decisive goal early in the second half to hand the Malta champions a vital lead ahead of next Thursday’s return leg in Riga.
Despite all the pre-match concerns over the poor condition of the National Stadium pitch, the Spartans put on a focused and tactically disciplined display. After soaking up early pressure from RFS, Ħamrun gradually imposed themselves and began to threaten through the pace of Thioune and Joseph Mbong.
The only goal arrived in the 56th minute. From a poor RFS goalkick, Eder pounced on the loose ball and immediately released Mbong. The Malta winger delivered a dipping cross into the path of Thioune, who finished clinically to send the home crowd into raptures.
From there, Ħamrun showed maturity in game management, absorbing RFS pressure while continuing to create opportunities of their own. Substitute Matias Garcia nearly doubled the lead late on when he teed up Thioune for a deflected effort, while Sven Xerri saw a header saved from the resulting corner.
RFS pushed hard in stoppage time, but the Spartans’ defence stood firm to protect their advantage, sparking jubilant celebrations among the home supporters at the final whistle.
With this win, Giacomo Modica’s men now travel to Riga with momentum firmly on their side, just 90 minutes away from potentially sealing a historic place in the group stage of a UEFA club competition.
