Police protection for Robert Aquilina has been removed

Police protection for Robert Aquilina, the President of Malta’s section of Fondazione Falcone, has been suddenly removed this week, in an announced move by the Police. Robert Aquilina was taken to Court on a trumped-up case of domestic violence which was mainly used to smear him in the press and Labour politicians. His wife requested to drop the charges, in a statement, declared that the issue was of a personal nature rather than a criminal case.

Robert Aquilina was the whistleblower who exposed details on the Pilatus Bank scandal in 2023 in his book, Pilatus: A Laundromat Bank in Europe, in which he detailed how a magisterial inquiry recommended criminal prosecution for six senior bank officials but only one was pursued. Until this day, Ali Sadr Hasheminejad, the previous owner of the bank has not been charged. The Police and the Courts are putting pressure on Robert Aquilina to publicly reveal his sources, however the Police already have this information.

Robert Aquilina has faced various public and private threats for his outspoken activism against corruption and in defence of the rule of law as President of the NGO Repubblika. Such threats are not uncommon for anti-corruption activists. More recently, Jason Azzopardi also had the door of his office vandalised.
