According to the latest EuroStat figures, Malta has the second highest share of foreign tertiary students among its student population with up to 29.6% of its tertiary student population being foreign students. The country with the highest rate of foreign tertiary students is Luxembourg with 52.3%. Malta is followed by Cyprus with 22.3%.
The EU countries with the lowest rate of foreign students are Greece with 3%, Croatia with 3.7% and Spain with 4.3%.
Most of the foreign students come from outside of the EU.
Students from Asia were the largest group of foreign students in Ireland (45.0%), Finland (43.35), Germany (40.1%) and Italy (36%).
More than half of Maltaโs foreign students come from Europe, while Asian students account for 30% of the total. The majority are English language students, with 80,946 visiting Malta in 2024 alone to study English.
