Malta continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading English language learning destination, with 80,946 foreign students attending courses at local licensed English Language Teaching (ELT) schools in 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO). This marks a 3% increase, equating to 2,379 more students, compared to the previous year.
The data reveals that the largest demographic segment of ELT students in 2024 were children aged 15 and under, comprising 28.1% of total enrolments. They were closely followed by students aged 16 to 17, who made up 22%. This trend underscores Maltaโs appeal among younger learners, particularly during summer and school break periods.
General English: Standard emerged as the most popular course option among students, accounting for 77% of total enrolments in ELT institutions.
The NSO also reported a total of 256,868 student weeks recorded throughout 2024, indicating a healthy level of sustained course participation across the year.
To support this growing demand, Maltaโs ELT sector employed 1,381 staff members during the year. Teaching and academic staff formed the majority, representing 53.8% of the total workforce.
