Robert Aquilina’s wife requests Court to drop domestic violence charges and condemns character assassination campaign against Robert Aquilina

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa, the Labour Party and the Women’s Rights Foundation have damaged years of work and advocacy about domestic violence and women’s rights after having conducted a character assassination campaign against Robert Aquilina on false allegations that he beat his wife.

Robert Aquilina’s wife issued a statement in which she declared that she requested the Police to drop charges of domestic violence, and condemned the character assassination against her husband Robert Aquilina. She admitted that the Police got involved between the couple after they heard the couple arguing and denied the allegations of domestic violence. She also said that her case was used to politically attack Robert Aquilina and condemned the leaks from the Police Force about the case.

The Police don’t need the victim’s testimony to pursue a case about domestic violence and can independently continue with the Court case. Robert Aquilina is also being subjected by the Police Commissioner to a sham investigation about the leaks of the Pilatus Bank investigation.

Multiple sources have confirmed with The Maltese Herald that details about the case were leaked by Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa to Saviour Bazan, the co-owner of MaltaToday.ย ย The Women’s Rights Foundation also issued a press statement implying that Jeanette Aquilina’s life was in danger.

Robert Aquilina is one of Malta’s leading dissidents and a critic of the Police Commissioner. He resigned from his roles in Repubblica and the Fondazione Giovanni Falcone following leaks to the press about the case.

I am sure I am not alone in wishing Dr and Mrs Aquilina, and their three children, my best wishes. They are in a very sad situation and it is disgusting, but not surprising, that the police have clearly manipulated them for political purposes.
