Momentum has voiced serious concern following Parliament’s unanimous approval of the transfer of 529 square metres of public land in Luqa to Polidano Properties Ltd – owned by controversial developer Charles Polidano, known as “Ic-Caqnu.”
In a strongly worded statement, Momentum Chairperson Arnold Cassola criticised both major political parties for backing the deal without public scrutiny or transparency.
“Once again, public land is being handed over for development behind closed doors,” Cassola said. “This vote, supported by both PL and PN MPs, comes on the heels of the Manoel Island saga, where thousands called for the protection of public land. Have our representatives learned nothing?”
Momentum highlighted the absence of public consultation and the troubling lack of debate surrounding the transfer, especially considering Polidano’s long track record of planning breaches and illegalities.
“This cannot continue,” the group stated. “Malta’s land is finite. Every square metre given away today is one less for future community use.”
Drawing parallels with Manoel Island, Momentum stated that only sustained public pressure forced a reconsideration of development plans there, and urged citizens and media to hold decision-makers accountable.
The group is calling for:
- Stronger parliamentary oversight on land transfers
- Mandatory public consultation before approval
- A national moratorium on new land deals until a public land strategy is adopted
Cassola concluded, “It is no longer acceptable for MPs to vote blindly while the public remains in the dark. Malta needs a transparent, fair, and long-term approach to managing its land.”
