We at The Maltese Herald pride ourselves on publishing stories in a critical and investigative manner, presenting all aspects of a case: including those that are taboo or difficult to comprehend
Communicating and investigating the complexity of some cases and issues is risky because those who have hidden agendas can find weaknesses in the stories about such ases and use them for manipulation and disinformation.
The Maltese Herald has always been consistent in its reporting about domestic violence and local femicides and we consider these cases as serious and also part of a wider problem in Maltese society.
We are currently covering the story about Robert Aquilina who has been accused by his wife of domestic violence. We are not defending Robert Aquilina on his personal case. Robert Aquilina will defend himself in Court and has personal matters to deal with. Robert Aquilina is one of Malta’s major dissident leaders and the details of his case are being leaked by the Police Commissioner to pro-Labour Party outlets.
The pro-Labour Party outlets are publishing the full details of his case and these are also being quoted by the mainstream press. We don’t feel the need to re-publish these details since they are all over the internet.
However, we are going to address an aspect of this story which is being missed by the mainstream press. Irrespective whether Robert Aquilina was a wife beater or not, all the criminals of the Labour Party and their supporters are currently celebrating his case and using it as a justification for years and years of criminality by the Labour government and its proponents.
Some of the Labour Party-leaning individuals celebrating the case about Robert Aquilina have a history of domestic violence themselves including Karl Stagno Navarra and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando. These individuals, are obviously, not the ideal advocates for feminism and women rights.
The ongoing campaign against Robert Aquilina by the pro-Labour Party media is systematic.
It should also be noted that the Women’s Rights Foundation, which advocates for women’s rights, is lead and administered by pro-Labour Party leaning individuals. Thisย fact should be pointed out, not as an attack against the WRF but for transparency. The WRF has issued a very damning statement against the Magistrate’s decision to send Robert Aquilina back home after he was interrogated by the police on the incident. The organisation said that these kind of decisions in the past have led to femicide, and the organisation is factually correct. However, it should be also noted that it is very disturbing and potentially cruel if Robert Aquilina is being used as an example on a serious social phenomenon if his case is not actually as being portrayed by the pro-Labour press.
We are not defending Robert Aquilina and we commend the work that the WRF does. We will keep addressing the underreported aspects and complexities of the case fulfilling our commitment to present a transparent reality.
To conclude, we not only find the allegations of domestic violence as concerning, but we also find it concerning that these allegations are suddenly being used as a justification for the years and years of criminality by the Labour Party and its proponents that even lead to the murder of a journalist.
