Home Affairs Minister announces new reform to introduce effective prison sentences for road deaths caused by drunk-driving

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has just announced that the government will be tabling a reform in parliament which will introduce effective prison sentences for those who are found guilty of causing death with drunk-driving.

The government is introducing this reform following public outcry over a young man with a Maserati who killed a fast-food courier.

The Minister said that despite the fact that the Police have conducted a record of 2000 road-checks this year testing for alcohol, there are still individuals who are abusing and drunk-driving. The Minister also announced that random drug-tests for drivers will be also be introduced by the police. Penalties for drunk-driving or driving under the influence of drugs will also increase.
