At least 15 people were killed in a tragic accident at around 6 pm yesterday when Lisbon’s iconic Gloria Funicular (Elevador da Glória) derailed. Another 18 people were injured, including a child. The accident occurred when the cable-hauled car left the track and crashed into a building.
Press reports state that the cabin derailed as the traction cable snapped making the breaks unusable as it descended from Bairro Alto and crashed in Rua da Glória, near Avenida da Liberdade.
The Gloria Funicular is a popular tourist attraction in Lisbon, connecting Praça dos Restauradores with Bairro Alto—both areas frequented by tourists and locals. The incident occurred during rush hour, and many witnesses said the cabin was out of control before it crashed into a building
European leaders and foreign ministers conveyed their condolences to the families of the victims. EU Council President Antonio Costa said that the Elevador Da Glória had marked his life.
