The first silverware of the 2025-26 domestic women’s football season will be decided on Sunday when Swieqi United and Mġarr United face off in the Assikura Women’s Super Cup at the Centenary Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
Swieqi United, last season’s league champions, will be looking to defend their title after last year’s victory over Birkirkara. Dorianne Theuma’s side heads into this clash full of confidence following a dominant 8-1 win against San Ġwann, in which new signing Salamatu Abdulai, a former Ghana U20 international, scored a hat-trick.
The Owls have been busy in the transfer market, strengthening their squad with several key additions including Valentina Rapa, Bulgarian international Aleksandra Yaneva, and Maltese forward Sara Saliba, who previously played for Pomigliano and AC Milan. Their competitive season started early with a UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign, where they defeated Moldova’s Anenii Noi before bowing out to Slovakia’s Spartak Myjava.
Meanwhile, Mġarr United are chasing their first-ever Super Cup title after qualifying for the competition by winning the domestic cup — their maiden trophy in women’s football. The Greens have made an impressive start to their league campaign, including a 2-0 victory over Swieqi, thanks to goals from their exciting attacking duo, Josline N’Guessan and Valeria Villegas.
French striker N’Guessan, a summer recruit, has made an immediate impact, scoring in her first two matches. Villegas, one of last season’s standout players, showcased her quality once again with a brace in Mġarr’s 5-0 win over Valletta last week.
Last season’s meetings between Swieqi and Mġarr were evenly contested, with both sides securing two wins each, while the remaining two encounters ended in draws — setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling battle for the first trophy of the season.
