The Malta Under-21 National Team endured a challenging start to their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign, falling to a 5-0 defeat against Greece on Tuesday evening at the Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali.
Greece began the match with high intensity, pressing Malta from the outset. Georgios Koutsias registered the game’s first effort after turning sharply inside the penalty area, but his shot drifted wide. Malta gradually settled into the game, showing more composure in possession and pushing the visitors back.
However, Greece broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when a lobbed pass was not cleared by the Maltese defence, allowing Stavros Pnevmonidis to fire home from close range. Malta regrouped defensively and managed to contain Greece for much of the half, but a costly mistake in stoppage time handed the visitors their second goal. A loose pass from goalkeeper Luca Camilleri was intercepted by Koutsias, who calmly lifted the ball into the unguarded net, giving Greece a 2-0 lead at the break.
More goals after the break
Coach Davide Mazzotta responded with two attacking substitutions at halftime, introducing Sean Gatt and Jake Grech. The changes gave Malta fresh attacking impetus, and the hosts saw more of the ball in the early stages of the second half. Despite Malta’s improved play, Greece capitalized on a quick counterattack in the 54th minute, with Koutsias surging through the heart of the defence to slot past Camilleri for his second of the night and Greece’s third.
Just two minutes later, Greece came close to extending their lead further when Athanasios Koutsogoulas was played through on goal, but Camilleri produced an excellent save to deny him. Malta responded with a rare chance of their own as Jake Azzopardi struck a powerful effort from distance, which flew narrowly over the bar.
Greece made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute when a clever flick opened space for Pnevmonidis, who finished clinically to grab his second goal. The away side continued to press, and although Malta’s defence held firm for the remainder of the match, Greece added a fifth in the final minute of regular time. Substitute Dimitris Rallis pounced on a defensive error to round off the scoring.
Despite the heavy defeat, Malta showed moments of promise and will now focus on upcoming qualifiers against Northern Ireland on October 9 and Georgia on October 14.
