Malta to compete in International Snooker Challenge Cup in France

A team of Maltese amateur snooker players has departed for Dunkerque, France, to compete in this year’s edition of the International Challenge Cup (ICC). This marks Malta’s third consecutive appearance in the tournament, having achieved impressive results in recent years — finishing third in 2024 and second last year.

This year’s event will feature five competing nations: Malta, France, Scotland, Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Last year, Malta proudly hosted the tournament, while this year’s 13th edition returns to France. The very first ICC was also held in France, in Ronchin, near Lille.

Tournament Format and History

The winner of the ICC will be determined by the nation that secures the highest number of frames won over the three days of competition.

The Republic of Ireland has been the dominant force in the tournament’s history, winning eight editions, including last year’s event in Malta. Northern Ireland has lifted the trophy three times, while Scotland won their sole title in 2023, when they hosted the tournament in Edinburgh — the same year Malta made its debut in the competition.

Malta’s Squad

The Maltese contingent for this year’s tournament consists of nine players, competing across three categories:

• Men’s Category: Chris Peplow, Joseph Casha, Isaac Borg, John Farrugia

• Masters Category: Arthur Cachia, Philip Ciantar, Frans Mintoff, Tony Mifsud

• Junior Category: Xavier Rizzo

Leading the delegation is Lothar Mallia, Secretary General of the Malta Billiards & Snooker Association. Ivan Attard will serve as both team captain and referee during the tournament.

Match Schedule

Malta will kick off their campaign tomorrow afternoon against hosts France.

• Friday: Malta faces Scotland.

• Saturday (Final Day):

  • Morning match against Northern Ireland

  • Afternoon clash against the Republic of Ireland, who are fielding a strong squad, including five players from last year’s championship-winning team.

Malta will be aiming to build on their steady progress over the past two years and challenge for their first-ever ICC title. With a mix of experience and emerging talent, the team hopes to deliver another memorable performance on the international stage.
