Spain says it will boycott the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest if Israel participates, and Ireland is also considering a boycott. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, insisted that Israel should be treated the same as Russia and should also be banned from sporting events. The Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici announced that Malta won’t be joining the calls for a boycott against Israel and Malta will be participating irrespective of Israel’s participation.
The Labour Party has run an extensive blood-libel campaign against European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the European Union of supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The Labour Party also ensured to project itself as a major advocate for Palestinians and the Prime Minister also condemned the massacres of children in Gaza without mentioning Israel directly.
In spite this virtuous talk, Malta is unable to take a position against Israel, allows its teams to play in Malta and isn’t even able to condemn it for an attack it conducted off the Maltese coast. In terms of foreign policy, it shows that the Prime Minister doesn’t take foreign policy seriously. Malta showed weakness when it failed to follow up about an act of Israeli aggression off its coast. Taking positions in international fora would help augment the government’s foreign policy abroad.
The government has regularly failed to facilitate any success at the Eurovision, which is embarrassing in terms of a track-record, yet even this is not a priority for the government. The Eurovision song contest in Malta has been reduced to a major TV event owing to a dearth of alternative TV events and an actual music industry. This is the inevitable result of Labour’s transformation of the public broadcaster into a propaganda arm for the government. The Eurovision song contest has become the main cultural TV event for the Labour Party audience because Labour killed all other culture on the public broadcaster and ultimately, this is why Malta’s participation in the Eurovision song contest will be preserved as it is in all its mediocrity and without considering foreign policy.
