Mġarr United extend unbeaten run as Swieqi stun Hibernians

Mġarr United maintained their unbeaten start to the Assikura Women’s League with a crucial 2-1 victory over rivals Birkirkara, tightening their grip at the top of the standings.

The leaders struck twice in the first half through Yanina Mendez and Valeria Villegas, whose clinical finishing gave Mġarr a commanding lead before the break. Birkirkara, however, responded early in the second half when substitute Gabriella Zahra pulled one back just two minutes after coming on. Despite late pressure from the Stripes, Mġarr’s defence held firm to claim all three points.

The defeat leaves Birkirkara facing an uphill battle, as they now sit nine points adrift of the league leaders after just four games, a gap that could prove difficult to close without a swift turnaround in form.

Meanwhile, Swieqi United produced a spirited comeback to defeat Hibernians 2-1 in a key clash between the teams locked in second place.

Hibernians made a dream start when Natalee Geren opened the scoring inside four minutes. However, Swieqi hit back with two quickfire goals before half-time, Sara Saliba equalising before Salamatu Abdulai completed the turnaround. The Owls then managed the second half with composure to seal a vital victory, joining Hibernians on nine points and staying within reach of leaders Mġarr.

In the other match of the round, San Ġwann and Valletta shared the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate, with both sides collecting their first point of the season.
