Matchday 2 of the BOV Challenge League 2025/26 produced plenty of late drama, big scorelines, and a reshuffling at the top of the table.
Mgarr United and Fgura United are the early pacesetters with perfect records, while Melita and Balzan bounced back with emphatic wins.
Mgarr United 1-0 Birzebbuga St Peter’s
Goal: Cristhyan 82’
Mgarr United continued their flawless start to the campaign with a hard-fought victory over Birzebbuga St Peter’s at the Centenary Stadium.
Birzebbuga were the better side for long stretches, creating several clear chances, but veteran goalkeeper Jonathan Debono produced crucial saves to keep them at bay.
Coach Shaun Bajada made key second-half changes, introducing Terence Vella and Brazilian playmaker Cristhyan, which proved decisive.
In the 82nd minute, Cristhyan scored the winner after a dazzling solo run that left several Birzebbuga defenders stranded before firing past Julian Azzopardi.
Birzebbuga will be disappointed after wasting opportunities through Alex Bruno, Paul Lapira, and David Oliveira, while Mgarr’s clinical finish ensured they remain joint leaders.
Fgura United 2-0 Santa Lucia
Goals: Abdel Rahman 49’, Andrews 67’
Fgura United also secured back-to-back victories, maintaining a perfect record without conceding a goal.
After a dull first half dominated by defensive discipline, Alan Abdel Rahman broke the deadlock just four minutes after the restart, finishing neatly after being set up on the right.
Santa Lucia responded strongly as Adrian Borg forced a fine save from Yenz Cini. Still, Fgura punished their wastefulness when Liberian striker Nicholas Andrews powered home a clinical second on 67 minutes.
Andrews almost added another soon after, while Michael Gatt went close with a volley late on as Fgura finished the game in total control.
Gudja United 1-1 Żebbuġ Rangers
Goals: Quintero 71’ (pen), Gatt 81’
Gudja United and Żebbuġ Rangers played out a lively draw that saw both sides create enough chances to win.
Żebbuġ nearly struck first when Lydon Sammut hit the post on 30 minutes, while Gudja’s Joseph Agbakwuru came close at the other end, his shot skimming the side-netting.
Gudja took the lead in the 71st minute when Donys Quintero calmly converted from the penalty spot after being fouled by Jake Attard.
However, Żebbuġ fought back and grabbed their first point of the season when Luca Gatt smashed home an equaliser nine minutes from time, ensuring a dramatic finish.
Swieqi United 1-1 St Andrews
Goals: Mawuena 12’, Mosquera 67’
Swieqi United were left frustrated after dominating their local derby but failing to hold on to their lead.
Salam Mawuena put Swieqi ahead early, finishing from close range after a swift attack.
The Owls had chances to double their lead as Kian Leonardi twice hit the woodwork and saw another long-range strike saved.
Despite their control, Swieqi were punished when Duvan Mosquera equalised for St Andrews with a powerful shot in the 67th minute.
Swieqi pushed hard late on, with Mawuena again hitting the post, but they had to settle for a point.
Żurrieq 1-5 Melita
Goals: Attard 25’, Yepez 49’, 55’, Allionda 63’; Zerafa 68’, Cassar Torregiani 90’
Melita bounced back spectacularly from their Matchday 1 setback, thrashing Żurrieq with a dominant display.
Captain Jean Pierre Attard opened the scoring midway through the first half after a swift counterattack, and the Amateurs never looked back.
In the second half, Venezuelan striker Jesus Andres Yepez stole the show, netting two goals in six minutes — first with a curling strike, then a precise low finish — to put the game beyond reach.
Quadri Allionda added a fourth before Żurrieq grabbed a consolation through Jamie Zerafa.
Teenage talent Timothy Cassar Torregiani capped off the rout with a late fifth, showing Melita’s attacking power this season.
Sirens 1-3 Balzan
Goals: Cipriott (OG) 26’; Santos 46’, Oluwale 70’, Chiemezie 80’
Balzan showed their resilience, coming from behind to defeat Sirens and claim their first win since returning to the second tier.
Sirens led at halftime thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Sean Cipriott, who deflected a cross from Trezeguet Zammit into his own net.
Balzan equalised straight after the restart when Gabriel Luis Santos headed home.
They struck the woodwork again before finally taking the lead in the 70th minute through Awosanya Oluwale’s composed finish.
Substitute Stephen Chiemezie sealed the comeback ten minutes from time with another header, giving Balzan a deserved three points.
Pietà Hotspurs 2-0 Vittoriosa Stars
Goals: Bigode 41’, Felippe 47’
Pietà Hotspurs controlled proceedings from start to finish to earn their first win of the season.
After dominating the first half, they finally broke through when Renan Bigode tapped in a cross from Gabriel Mannino just before halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Arthur Felippe doubled the lead with a well-placed header.
Vittoriosa never recovered, as Pietà’s organised defence kept Godwin Emmanuel quiet and ensured a comfortable victory.
Mtarfa 0-2 Marsa
Goals: Cruz 21’, Dor Jok 90’
Marsa finally moved into positive points after starting the season on -2, cruising past Mtarfa in a one-sided clash.
Gabriel Cruz gave Marsa the lead with a towering header midway through the first half, and they came close to doubling their advantage before the break when Gianluca Bugeja’s shot struck the crossbar.
The second half was all Marsa, with Marquinho hitting the woodwork again and several chances going begging.
Their dominance was finally rewarded in stoppage time when substitute Atem Dor Jok scored a simple tap-in to seal the victory.
