In a press conference from New York, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that he has ordered a Spanish naval ship to protect the Gaza flotilla from any further attacks by Israel. The Gaza flotilla, called the “Global Sumud Flotilla” is composed of up to 51 ships and is currently sailing off the coast of Crete.
Prime Minister Sanchez said that the decision was being taken to protect Spanish citizens in the flotilla and said that international law should be respected.
The flotilla came under multiple Israeli missile and drone attacks, similar to those the ship Conscience suffered off the Maltese coast.
Italy also sent the naval frigate Fasan to protect the flotilla after the attacks took place. The Italian Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto condemned the attacks and said that Italian citizens have the right to protest and that international law should be followed.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has changed its tone after Italian and Spanish ships were sent to guard the flotilla and is now requesting the ships to call at a nearby harbour outside Israel to unload the aid and have it delivered to Gaza. Israel previously described the flotilla as a provocation that is supporting Hamas.
