Hibernians survive Tarxien scare to stay top of YoHealth Malta Premier League

Hibernians were made to work hard for their victory as they overcame a spirited Tarxien Rainbows side 3-1 to maintain their place at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier League standings.

The Paolites were far from comfortable winners, surviving a strong second-half fightback from their local rivals and, at times, riding their luck to avoid dropping crucial points.

Once again, Lucas Villela proved to be the difference-maker. The in-form forward struck twice, including a vital goal just before half-time, to secure the three points for his side.

Meanwhile, Tarxien will be left frustrated after their brave second-half display. Despite showing resilience and threatening to snatch a point, lapses in concentration at the back ultimately cost them dearly in this derby clash.

Early Scare for Hibernians

The Rainbows nearly stunned their more-fancied neighbours inside the opening ten minutes. A long throw-in found Obuhu Ifeh, who unleashed a thunderous volley that rattled the crossbar with Hibs goalkeeper Hugo Sacco completely beaten.

Having survived that early scare, Hibernians found their rhythm and broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Prolific striker Cleiton was sent through on goal and coolly slotted past the onrushing Andrea Cassar to make it 1-0.

However, Hibernians suffered a setback soon after when defender Mattias Ellus was forced off injured on 24 minutes, with Pedrao coming on as his replacement.

Villela Strikes Before the Break

Tarxien were fortunate not to fall further behind when Wallison cleared Villela’s close-range effort off the line following a corner.

Villela almost doubled Hibs’ lead two minutes before half-time with some dazzling footwork, only to fire over the bar with just Cassar to beat.

But he made no mistake moments later, heading home Duane Bonnici’s pinpoint cross in first-half stoppage time to put Hibernians 2-0 ahead.

Tarxien Hit Back

Just two minutes into the second half, Tarxien reignited the contest when Kwasi Donsu unleashed a powerful strike that flew past Sacco, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Hibs appeared rattled, and moments later, Sacco’s poor goal-kick went straight to Octavio, whose first-time shot drifted wide, sparing the goalkeeper’s blushes.

Villela responded on the hour mark with a fierce effort that whistled just past the post as Hibernians tried to restore their two-goal cushion.

Tensions flared on 63 minutes when Sacco miscontrolled the ball near the edge of his box and was dispossessed by Ibeh, who set up Francisco Conceicao Santos, only for Silas to produce a crucial block.

Villela Seals the Win

With Tarxien pressing forward, Villela struck again late on to secure the points for Hibernians, his decisive finishing underlining why he remains one of the league’s deadliest forwards.

The result keeps Hibs firmly at the top of the table, while Tarxien are left to reflect on a missed opportunity to claim a statement result.

Late Goals Lift Ħamrun Spartans Past Marsaxlokk

Ħamrun Spartans struck twice in the closing minutes to defeat Marsaxlokk 2-0, earning a vital win in their push for a Top Six finish in the YoHealth Malta Premier League.

The match was tightly contested, with both sides creating chances. Marsaxlokk came close in the first half through Dodo and Ajom Ajok, while goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi denied Spartans’ Saliou Thioune and Eder.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 84th minute when Mouad El Fanis unleashed a stunning curling strike into the top corner. Six minutes later, N’Dri Koffi converted a controversial penalty — awarded despite replays showing little contact — to secure the three points.

The win moves Ħamrun to 12 points, three clear of Marsaxlokk, strengthening their bid to stay in the league’s upper half heading into the next phase.
