Here’s Adnan Ahmadzada at the inauguration of the Electrogas gas-fired Delimara plant

This article has been updated with further details and clarifications.

There is a very interesting photo online that was published by Azer News of Adnan Ahmadzada in Malta at the inauguration of the Delimara gas-fired plant by Electrogas. SOCAR owns up to a third of Electrogas along with Gem Holdings and Siemens. The news article reports that SOCAR’s president, Rovnag Abdullayev was also present for the inauguration and held meetings with ex-Premier Joseph Muscat.

Here, in the featured photo Adnan Ahmadzada was SOCAR’s Head (General Manager) of the Marketing & Economic Operations Department. In May 2018, he was promoted to Executive Chairman (Executive Director) of SOCAR Trading S.A. In 2019 he was promoted again as Vice-President for Investments & Marketing. Adnan Ahmadzada had a hand in the Electrogas deal and was promoted to SOCAR’s chief trader after the deal was finally executed.

Another interesting connection that Adnan Ahmadzada had was with Azim Novruzov, who seems to have his companies based in Dubai. Our sources informed us that he is also suspected of flying to Moscow several times to meet with Rosneft’s President Igor Sechin. Adnan Ahmadzade is also suspected of introducing Novruzov to Sechin. Azim Novruzov denies these allegations.

Azim Novruzov is suspected of being in the orbit of top SOCAR personnel and has a company called Sumato Energy, which is tied to Anar Aliyev (a previous government Minister) according to a report by Global Witness.

Adnan Ahmadzade is currently under arrest in Azerbaijan and is considered to be the hidden hand behind Alkagesta. Alkagesta is Malta’s largest oil bunkerer and it claims that it grew expansively and organically after it found an “arbitrage opportunity”. This is of course a fairy tale.

The connections reported here will eventually help us understand how Alkagesta grew to become Malta’s largest oil bunkerer.

  1. […] It’s very strange that the government has allowed a foreign company to take over most of Malta’s oil bunkering operations, effectively forfeiting tens and hundreds of millions of Euros of tax revenues in the long-term. This issue also ties with how Alkagesta was allowed to fester and grow so big in Malta, with the origins of its operators in Malta found in SOCAR’s involvement with Electrogas. […]

  2. […] In a letter sent to to us by his lawyers in the UK, Azim Novruzov has denied all allegations about him in the article here. […]

  3. […] new connection between the Electrogas/SOCAR clique of traders and Alkagesta, Malta’s largest oil cargo-trader, has emerged thanks to an indirect link found […]
