Maltese couple accused of defrauding animal sanctuary in Spain

Horrific accusations have come to light against a Maltese couple who defrauded an animal sanctuary in Costa Blanca, Spain. Abigail Darmanin and Karl Darmanin are being accused by the administrators of the K9 sanctuary of having volunteered to run the animal shelter on false pretenses to fleece the shelter of its donations. Their response to the allegations has been posted below. They have also been reported to the Spanish police but have reportedly fled Spain since then.

Up to six animals have also died while the shelter was under their care.

Abigail Darmanin also seems to have used her maiden surname to present herself to the animal activists in Spain because they are referring to her as “Abigail Attard”. In Malta they run the “Funky Pet Malta Doggy Daycare” in Qormi.

The couple is also known in Malta by animal activists as aggressive individuals who often publicly insult and attack the said animal activists.

    Dear Mark,

    I have seen your name attached to a post on The Maltese Herald regarding myself and my family. The content being spread is based on false information provided by others, and it is damaging to us personally and professionally.

    For clarity:

    At no point were our dogs abandoned. This can be confirmed by Guardia Civil records and by the person who temporarily fostered them.

    We never misused donations or acted against the interest of the animals. Those accusations are fabricated.

    Several statements being circulated — including about transport, lifestyle, and volunteers — are defamatory and without evidence.

    I ask you to urgently review the accuracy of what has been published and to remove or amend any content that cannot be proven. Otherwise, I will be forced to pursue formal steps to protect my name and reputation.

    I trust you will treat this matter seriously, as it reflects on the credibility of the publication.

      Why would Spanish animal activists have any interest at all to defame you? Also making legal threats won’t help your case.

    Brandy was at the rehoming centre following her owner loosing is fight against cancer We have been told Brandy escaped end of July 2025 and although K9 have done everything they can, still no sign of Brandy we would like the previous managers to give their version
