Yesterday at the United Nations General Assembly, Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg participated in the UN Security Council meeting focusing on Ukraine. After the meeting the Deputy-Prime Minister said that Malta stands firmly behind Ukraine. Malta’s Foreign Minister had previously also issued statements condemning Russia’s violation of European airspace in Poland and Estonia.
After the meeting the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas held a press conference with the delegates and Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha in which the High Representative stated that the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a colonial assault. In a press release issued after the meeting, the EU’s High Representative also described Russia as a global and European security threat. The EU High Representative stressed that it is Russia that is undermining peace efforts and that Ukraine aims for a lasting peace.
The meeting served to consolidate diplomatic support for Ukraine which is currently required to convince EU member states and the US to increase sanctions on Russia. President Donald Trump took a pro-Ukraine position yesterday following a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky which President Zelensky described as a big shift.
Malta’s Foreign Affairs Ministers is participating in various side-conferences and meetings during the United Nations General Assembly.
