BOV Amateur League I 2025/26: opening weekend drama with shocks, late goals, and standout performances

The new season of the BOV Amateur League I kicked off with a full set of matches across three days, featuring dramatic late goals, resilient defending, and some early shocks.

Friday Night Matches

Mqabba 1-0 Qormi

  • Goal: Luca Bugeja (2โ€™)

  • Hero: Mario Bartolo (Mqabba, goalkeeper)

Mqabba made a dream return to the third tier with a hard-fought victory over promotion hopefuls Qormi, despite being on the back foot for most of the match.

The game started in stunning fashion as Luca Bugeja scored straight from a free-kick in the second minute, catching the Qormi defense and goalkeeper Daniel Attard off guard. From then on, it was mostly Qormi attacking and Mqabba defending with discipline.

Qormi missed several good chances, the best falling to winger Dale Mifsud, who twice shot wide from promising positions. In the 39th minute, Mario Bartolo pulled off a stunning save to deny Mifsud again.

On the stroke of halftime, Qormi were awarded a penalty when Carlos Debattista was fouled, but Bartolo saved Aworiโ€™s spot-kick with his feet, a defining moment in the match.

The second half saw less quality football but plenty of tension. Mqabba slowed the pace to frustrate Qormi, while on the counter Jairo Andres Viveros missed two chances to seal the win. Qormiโ€™s only real late opportunity came via Dion Fava, whose header in the 86th minute went just wide.

Summary: A statement win for Mqabba built on defensive organization and goalkeeping heroics, while Qormi must improve their finishing to compete for promotion.

San Gwann 1-0 Senglea Athletic

  • Goal: Nahuel Velasquez (78โ€™)

In a battle between two sides expected to be in the promotion race, San Gwann narrowly defeated Senglea Athletic in a tense encounter.

The first half was balanced:

  • 7โ€™ โ€“ Gonzalo Virano struck the crossbar for San Gwann with a powerful effort.

  • 30โ€™ โ€“ Senglea goalkeeper Sean Mintoff produced a fine save to deny Zen Falzon.

  • 32โ€™ โ€“ At the other end, Keith Muscat wasted Sengleaโ€™s best chance by shooting off target from close range.

San Gwann brought on last seasonโ€™s top scorer Nahuel Velasquez at halftime, and his introduction changed the game. Senglea started strongly after the break, with Nigel Scerri setting up Muscat again, who missed another golden opportunity.

On 57 minutes, San Gwann were awarded a penalty when Hytem Kabar was brought down. Virano stepped up, but Mintoff saved brilliantly, keeping Senglea level.

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute, when Velasquez fired home a precise strike from the edge of the box. San Gwann could have doubled their lead soon after, but Virano blasted over the bar.

Veteran Timmy Thomas, introduced late for Senglea, nearly snatched an equaliser in stoppage time with two chances, but San Gwann held firm.

Summary: Velasquez proved the difference, while Senglea were left to rue missed chances and a saved penalty.

Saturday Matches

Victoria Hotspurs 3-1 Pembroke Athleta

  • Goals: Wagner (46โ€™), Kurt Borg (61โ€™), Ferdinando Apap (76โ€™) | Weverton Gomes (66โ€™)

  • Red Card: Rondinely (Victoria Hotspurs, 18โ€™)

Victoria Hotspurs, reigning Amateur League I champions, showed their quality by defeating Pembroke Athleta for the second consecutive week, having beaten them in the Jubilee Cup.

The match took a dramatic turn early on when Brazilian forward Rondinely was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle, leaving Victoria with ten men for over 70 minutes. Despite the disadvantage, Victoria continued to threaten, with Wagner forcing an excellent early save from Clayton Rapa.

The deadlock was broken seconds into the second half when Wagner spotted Rapa off his line and scored an extraordinary goal from near the halfway line.

61โ€™ โ€“ Victoria doubled their lead through Kurt Borg, finishing a well-worked move.
66โ€™ โ€“ Pembroke gave themselves hope as Weverton Gomes pounced to make it 2-1.
76โ€™ โ€“ Captain Ferdinando Apap sealed the win with a powerful strike from inside the box.

Summary: A resilient and clinical display from Victoria Hotspurs, who overcame adversity and showed why they remain strong title contenders.

Mellieha 1-5 Attard

  • Goals:

    • Mellieha: Glumac (22โ€™)

    • Attard: Schembri (25โ€™), Nwankwo (49โ€™), Ayorinde (60โ€™), Degabriele (67โ€™), Bonanno (85โ€™)

Attard sent out a clear message to the league with a stunning second-half performance, coming from behind to thrash Mellieha.

The first half saw Mellieha shock Attard by taking the lead through Sasa Glumac, but just three minutes later Nicholas Schembri equalised with a poacherโ€™s goal. Play was interrupted by a floodlight failure, and the half ended level at 1-1.

After the restart, Attard completely dominated:

  • 49โ€™ โ€“ Precious Nwankwo, formerly of Tarxien, scored a well-taken goal to put Attard ahead.

  • 60โ€™ โ€“ Tejumola Ayorinde went on a dazzling solo run before blasting home to make it 3-1.

Zejtun Corinthians 0-0 Xghajra Tornados

A tightly contested match at the Luxol Stadium ended in a goalless draw.

Best Chance:

  • 80โ€™ โ€“ Zejtunโ€™s Clyde Bouvet missed the gameโ€™s clearest opportunity, blasting over with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Both sides showed solid defensive organization but lacked creativity up front. With four teams set for relegation this season, they may need to focus more on survival than promotion.

Kirkop United 1-1 Lija Athletic

  • Goals: Oghenekewaro (49โ€™ pen) | Juan Alejandro Ruiz (54โ€™)

Promotion favourites Lija Athletic were held by a determined Kirkop United, who earned a valuable point in their survival battle.

49โ€™ โ€“ Kirkop took the lead when James Oghenekewaro was fouled in the box and converted the resulting penalty himself.
54โ€™ โ€“ Lija responded quickly, with Juan Alejandro Ruiz scoring from a similar angle to equalise.

Lija pushed hard late on, with Adam Magri-Overend and McParland going close, but Kirkopโ€™s defense held firm under pressure.
