The race for the YoHealth Malta Premier League leadership intensified this weekend as both Ħamrun Spartans and Floriana claimed vital wins to continue their strong starts to the season. Ħamrun’s convincing 2-0 triumph over Hibernians briefly sent them to the summit, only for Floriana to reclaim top spot with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mosta.
Floriana edge past Mosta with clinical display
Floriana extended their perfect start to the season with a third straight win, overcoming Mosta thanks to a decisive first-half strike from Jake Grech. Daniel Portela’s side once again demonstrated defensive discipline and composure, keeping their opponents at bay to move one point clear at the top of the table.
Mosta almost stunned Floriana in the opening minutes when Giancarlo Goncalves unleashed a powerful drive that cannoned off the upright after just four minutes. Floriana responded through Rui Areias, whose header drifted just over the bar.
The Greens grew into the game and took the lead on 23 minutes, with Federico Varela threading a perfect pass to Grech, who finished with a precise low shot past goalkeeper Akpan.
Floriana nearly doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Varela’s curling effort narrowly missed the target.
Mosta improved after the break and almost equalised through Prince Chibizor, but Cioletti produced a fine save to preserve Floriana’s lead. The Greens regained control, with Mustapha Jah posing a constant threat. On 70 minutes, Jah’s surging run was denied only by a sharp save from Akpan.
Four minutes later, Jah won a penalty when brought down by Bolanos at the edge of the box — though replays suggested the foul occurred outside the area. Jake Grech stepped up to take the spot kick, only for Akpan to make a spectacular save to keep Mosta in the game.
Despite the missed opportunity, Floriana managed the closing stages with professionalism, maintaining their narrow lead to claim another crucial three points and solidify their place at the summit.
Ħamrun Spartans overpower Hibernians to stay in contention
Earlier in the weekend, Ħamrun Spartans showcased their title credentials with a commanding 2-0 win over Hibernians at the Centenary Stadium. The Malta champions were tested early on but responded with quality and efficiency to hand Hibs their first defeat of the season.
Hibernians came out strong and nearly took the lead after four minutes when Lucas Villela raced past Ognjen Bjelicic and squared for Cleiton, who was just inches away from converting.
Ħamrun immediately punished that miss, striking just two minutes later. Merlin Hadzi played a sublime through ball to Semir Smajgalic, who calmly slotted past Hugo Sacco to make it 1-0.
The match remained competitive, with Hibs pushing for an equaliser while the Spartans looked threatening on the counter. Sacco kept his side in the game with key saves, denying Cadenovic on 24 minutes and Mbong shortly after.
Ħamrun thought they had doubled their lead before halftime when Smajgalic tapped in a cross from Cadenovic, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Hibernians dominated possession after the interval but lacked cutting edge in the final third. The Spartans capitalised on a swift counterattack on 60 minutes, as Polito and Hadzi combined to set up Mbong, who coolly finished past Sacco to seal the victory.
Hibs came close to pulling one back when Aiden Zammit’s header was saved by Henry Bonello, while Mouad El Fanis rattled the post with a thunderous strike in the dying moments. Substitute Scott Camilleri almost capped a dream debut for Ħamrun in stoppage time, but his curling shot whistled just wide.
The title race heats up
With these results, Floriana sit one point clear of Ħamrun at the top of the standings. Both teams have shown their dominance in recent weeks, with Floriana relying on defensive organisation and efficient attacking play, while Ħamrun’s pace and creativity have overwhelmed opponents.
As the season progresses, the battle between these two giants promises to be fiercely competitive, with every match potentially decisive in the race for the YoHealth Malta Premier League title.
