Gżira United and Marsaxlokk both recorded crucial victories over the weekend, with the Maroons edging past Mosta in a dramatic seven-goal contest, while Ayom Majok’s second-half brace earned the Southerners a hard-fought win over ten-man Tarxien Rainbows.
At the Centenary Stadium, new Gżira coach Darren Abdilla celebrated his return with a 4-3 triumph over Mosta in a pulsating encounter. The Maroons overturned an early deficit after Prince Chibuzor had put Mosta ahead, as Andre da Costa struck twice in quick succession before the break. Fabricio Virgens extended the lead shortly after the restart, only for Daniel Machado to quickly respond for the Blues. Luis Riascos restored Gżira’s cushion with a towering header on 63 minutes, but Zachary Brincat’s late strike set up a tense finale. Mosta pushed hard for an equaliser, but Gżira held firm to claim their first win of the campaign, lifting them out of the relegation zone and leaving Mosta bottom of the table.
Meanwhile, at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Marsaxlokk ended their three-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over Tarxien Rainbows. The hosts were reduced to ten men on 29 minutes when Ibeh Ofufu was sent off for a reckless challenge, but they remained compact until Ayom Majok made the breakthrough. The Australian forward struck twice in the space of four minutes midway through the second half, first latching onto Marcelo Barros’ through ball before calmly finishing again after a clever pass from substitute Ensell Attard. Despite Tarxien’s late efforts, Marsaxlokk’s defence held firm to secure three valuable points and climb to fifth in the standings.
