Ħamrun Spartans made an encouraging UEFA Conference League debut on Thursday night, pushing last season’s quarter-finalists Jagiellonia all the way before succumbing to a narrow 1-0 defeat in Poland.
A 58th-minute strike from Jesús Imaz proved decisive, while the Maltese champions were forced to play the final half-hour with ten men after Joseph Mbong was shown a red card. Despite the setback, Giacomo Modica’s side continued to battle bravely, carving out opportunities and showing they could compete with one of the competition’s established sides.
The first half saw Ħamrun create the better chances, with Saliou Thioune and N’Dri Koffi both denied by goalkeeper Abramowicz. Ante Coric also forced a superb save with a swerving shot, while Jagiellonia’s initial breakthrough before the interval was ruled out for a foul after VAR review.
After the restart, the hosts increased their pressure and capitalised when Imaz pounced on a misplaced pass to curl home the winner. Moments later, Mbong’s dismissal tilted the balance further, but even with ten men the Spartans threatened, most notably when Koffi came close to equalising from a cross by Camenzuli.
Goalkeeper Henry Bonello was again outstanding, producing several crucial saves to keep his side in contention until the very end.
Although the Spartans left Poland empty-handed, their performance offered plenty of encouragement. They showed resilience, quality, and personality against a strong Jagiellonia outfit and will now look ahead with confidence to their next group fixture against Lausanne in two weeks’ time.
