Former Janjaweed Commander found guilty of war crimes: first conviction on gender-based violence

Yesterday on Monday 06th October, the International Criminal Court has found Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, a former commander of the Janjaweed militia in Sudan, guilty of war crimes. The former Janjaweed commander was also found guilty of committing systematic gender-based violence in a first and historic conviction for the criminal court.

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, was a commander of the Janjaweed forces in Darfur, where they committed widespread torture, killing and rape against Sudanese citizens of non-Arabic origin. The genocide in Darfur, perpetuated by the Janjaweed militias from 2003, is still ongoing today.

The Janjaweed militias rebranded themselves as the Rapid Support Forces who today, are besieging the city of Al-Fashir. The RSF use rape against women profusely as a method for war and regularly retaliate against ordinary civilians whenever they receive military setbacks. They are sponsored and backed by the United Araba Emirates and receive their supplies from neighboring Libya and Chad.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC welcomed the ruling, which follows an investigation that began in 2005. The Judges of the Court will now decide on the sentencing.
