Malta’s participation in the individual Seniors category of the European Snooker Championship came to an end on Tuesday, after Arthur Cachia was eliminated at the quarter-final stage.
Cachia faced a tough opponent in Darren Morgan, a former professional and multiple-time E.B.S.A. European Senior Champion. The 59-year-old Welshman, widely considered the favourite, secured a 4–1 victory to book his place in the semi-finals and end the Maltese veteran’s impressive run in the competition.
Maltese Teams Begin Their Campaign
Meanwhile, Tuesday also marked the start of the Teams’ Seniors Championship, with all three Maltese teams in action on the opening day of the three-day event.
Malta 1 (Alex Borg & Arthur Cachia) narrowly lost their opening match 3–2 against Albania (Edlir Kurthysa & Mohamed Elaboody) but bounced back strongly with a 3–0 win over Finland 2 (Pertti Salo & Tero Nappari).
Malta 2 (Philip Ciantar & Frans Mintoff) played just one match on the day, defeating Ireland 2 (Tom Gleeson & Mark Walsh) with a solid 3–1 scoreline.
Malta 3 (Tony Mifsud & Ivan Attard) suffered two defeats — first 3–1 against Finland 1 (Jukka Haapakoski & Kari Keinänen), followed by a 3–0 loss to England 2 (Mark Joyce & Wayne Brown). Although eliminated from contention, Malta 3 will still play their final match to determine third place in Group E.
Key Matches Ahead
On Wednesday, the tournament schedule includes the final group matches, as well as the round of 16 and quarter-finals.
Both Malta 1 and Malta 2 remain in contention to progress to the last 16, with good opportunities to continue their run in the team competition.
