Alex Borg debuts in Brussels in first official visit as Opposition Leader

Alex Borg visited Brussels this week and held meetings with MEPs and EU officials for the first time as the Leader of Opposition. In the photo above he is seen with the European People’s Party Secretary-General, Manfred Weber He also met with the EPP’s Vice-Chair Jeroen Lenaers.

The Opposition Leader also held meetings with the EU officials including with EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius and European Commissioner for Fisheries Kostas Cadis.

Aning Malta’s diplomats, the Opposition Leader met with Malta’s Permanent Representative to the EU Neil Kerr, and Malta’s Ambassador to NATO and the EU Vanni Xuereb. He also visited the President of the European Parliament Robert Metsola and made a courtesy visit to Simon Busuttil.

In an official statement announcing the visits, the Nationalist Party said that as Europe faces threats, we need to be strong. The Nationalist Party reiterated that it intends to bring back good governance to Malta as it aims to form a government that would work for the benefit of all Maltese. On the meeting with the Fisheries Commissioner, the Nationalist Party said it discussed Malta’s growth potential in the fisheries sector.

The government only started addressing the situation of illegal fishing in Maltese waters earlier this year after encroachment by Tunisian and Italian boats increased significantly. As a result, the Maltese government requested for assistance from the EFCA which increased its inspections of vessels in Maltese waters.
