Iran vows to reverse anti-Hijab trend in Tehran with 80,000 new enforcers

Women in the capital city of Tehran, will be forced to wear the Islamic headscarf (Hijab) once again as the authorities enlist up 80,000 religious enforcers to enforce headscarf rules in Tehran, according to press reports. As part of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s to relax religious laws, the Supreme National Security Council suspended the Hijab Law in last May, but did not abolish it.

Religious laws in the capital city of Tehran became less enforceable after Israel bombed Iran in June leading to a significant disruption of the religious authorities. The authorities now seem to be reorganising to reestablish and reinforce their rule in the capital city.

Civil disobedience and mass protests against the religious authorities in Iran increased significantly in 2022, after the Iranian police murdered Mahsa Amini while in custody, after she was arrested for refusing to wear a hijab.
