Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has begun his five-year prison sentence at La Santé Prison in southern Paris. He is currently in solitary confinement for security reasons, in a recently renovated section of the prison that offers amenities, including landlines and television access.
Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in relation to undeclared funding he received from Libya’s dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, between 2005 and 2007 for his presidential campaign. Nicolas Sarkozy received in total up to €50 million from the Libyan government.
This is the first time in history that a French President has been jailed.
